In the early 1990s; I did not understand my body’s needs or my health like I do today.   nevertheless, looking back, now, I see that whenever my body needed I would ‘crave’ more of that food.

I ate plenty of beans, rice, and high protein foods that I did not notice much cravings. If you are not coming from a lifestyle or starvation or eating disorder, eating simple and healthy foods will meet your body’s expectations all the time.    

More importantly, limit stress as far as possible.  

Being stressed may encourage emotional eating and food cravings for a large number of comfort foods. Which can cause weight gain and depression at in turn can bring on more food cravings.  

Break the cycle of emotional and psychological food cravings. Study your body’s triggers, so has to only eat when truly hungry.

Your body intelligent, listen to it.   

What is Food Craving?

Food craving is not always hunger; it can just be a cry for water. A hydrated body is one way to overcoming food craving.  Drinking, at least 32 oz, of water daily helps to stop food craving in its track.  

Try drinking a glass of water before you reach for those salty chips. Your body will thank you and you may not have a need for those chips anymore.

Food craving, according to Merriam Webster, is an intense, urgent, or abnormal desire or longing. Food cravings can sometimes be yearning for foods that your mind tells you is missing from your diet.

Craving can sometimes be a habit we have developed over our lifetime and like any other habit, good or bad, food carving can be changed.

Food cravings are not all bad.

Food craving is your body’s way of telling you what it’s lacking. it’s your job to feed it the right things. Learn to listen and understand your craving. By doing so soon you will learn to filter out the good cravings from the bad.  

If you have an addicted personality your food cravings, like drugs, may linger for months or years. Your brain has the ability to remembering what foods you craved based on traumatic or joyful circumstances in your life.

Most importantly, with time and patience, you can retrain your brain to crave foods that nourish the body.

Why Does Food Cravings Happen?

Food Cravings come about when our bodies need some attention.

It can be an imbalance in our hormones from years of not eating properly or It can be an emotional, psychological, and nutritional deficiency.  

Food craving can be selective or non-selective.

Selective food cravings are cravings for specific foods. Foods that you grew up eating, like friends from McDonald’s, chips from your home country or states, or your mother’s homemade chicken soup.  

I love chips, but not any chips, I loved banana chips. When I came to the States I was, and still am, unable to find real banana chips.

No chips here would satisfice or replace my beloved banana chips. If I knew of anyone coming from my home country, I will ask them for this chip; then I would charity those chips like a newborn

I started to realized that it was not the chips I was cravings; it was the smells, taste, and feel of the chips that brought me back to a place I was familiar with.  

And, non-selective food craving is simply a longing to eat anything. Food has become a comfort blanket for you and you may not even feel the hunger in your stomach.
